Sitting in a Hanger in Mercer Co. NJ

Unread post by {FKR}Potatoehead »

Took a ride over to Mercer airport today to work on some equipment and saw this sweet prop spinner sitting in the hanger getting some engine work done. I have no idea what it is. Any ideas ?

That looks like a T-34 to me.

I'm thinking the same thing. I saw two at an airshow on the 4th, so it's pretty fresh in my memory. If memory serves me correct, I believe they are based on the Beechcraft Bonanza, but that was just what some old Bonanza owner told me once. However, the engine and cowling are a radial, and that canopy is definitely not stock, if indeed it is a T-34. The more I think about it, the more I think that it isn't a T-34. Maybe SNA can clue us in.

Ithink it's some version of the T-6, all the T-34 I seen have like a triangular front, wheres the T-6 is round, although, the T-6 was a duel prop, and this one has 3. This bloke shoulda asked someone....I know I would. :D

No, it's not a T-6 Texan. The T-6 Texan is a tail-dragger and the aircraft in the picture has tricycle gear. Also, take a look at the tail. The vertical stabilizer in the image is squared off. The T-6 Texan's vertical stabalizer is rounded. BTW, I actually got to fly a T-6 Texan once. It was with Russ Cook at the Dayton Air Show in '83. I also got to fly a Stearman Biplane that day. Here's an image of the T-6 Texan;

The aircraft in question is actually a T-28 Trojan. Here's an image of one;
