Wings~of~War: Battle of Midway

Unread post by Tiger »

S!~ All,

Currently, on the Wings~of~War server, a reenactment of the Battle of Midway is available via the admin panel. The mission was provided by =AVG=Boomer and it represents the first hour and a half after the combatants make contact. The version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is 4.10.1m UP3.0 RC4 with GS v4.1.2. The format is similar to that of the Pearl Harbor mission. The player is Allied and the Japanese forces are AI.
Mission Briefing wrote:June 4th, 1942 0550 hours. Take off in fighters and intercept the incoming raid. Select USMC VMF-221 as your Squadron. Actual battle reports: "Radar contacts bearing 310, approx 40 to 50 aircraft, angels 14". "At about 0620, I heard Capt. Carey transmit "Tally-ho" followed by "Hawks at angels 14, supported by fighters." I then started climbing, and sighted the enemy at approximately 14,000 feet at a distance of 5 to 7 miles out, and approximately 2 miles to my right. I immediately turned to a heading of about 7000 and continued to climb. I was endeavoring to get a position above and ahead of the enemy and come down out of the sun. However, I was unable to reach this point in time. I was at 17,000 feet when I started by attack. The target consisted of 3 divisions of 12 planes each, flying in division V's. I figured this group to consist of from 30 to 40 dive bombers of the Aichi Type 99.with fighter escort above them." "Ever since the Marine fighters had gone out, Midway had been on the qui vive. At 0619, its visual observation post had seen two aircraft falling in flames, some 25 miles away, as VMF-221 slashed at the Japanese. With all guns manned, and fire controlmen steadily tracking in the enemy formation, the Marines awaited only the correct moment to commence firing. At 0629, the Midway attack force was but eight miles away, and at 0630 Colonel Shannon gave his orders: "Open fire when targets are in range." One minute later, at 0631, every antiaircraft battery on Midway had commenced firing.Of this instant, wrote an officer, then in the 3d Defense Battalion: "The entire island was deathly silent after the buzz of the planes taking off. It was a beautiful sunny morning. The men all strained for a first glimpse, and I had to sharply remind the lookouts to keep the other sectors covered against surprise. Then we saw the Japs, and the tension snapped. A moment later we were in action." "At the very end of the strike, the 6th Defense Battalion's Eastern Island command post received a direct hit which killed the Marine sector-commander, Major William W. Benson, and wounded several other personnel. As the dive bombers completed their runs, Zero's from the Kaga, Akagi, Soryu, and Hiryu made numerous strafing passes at targets on both islands." After the enemy has stopped the attack, land your fighters and head out 310 to attack the fleet with your choice of TBF's and SBD's.
Enjoy!

S!~ Decker,

I just bumped the topic and I hadn't noticed that it changed the date of your post. That is rather strange.
