On 16 August 2011, Lt. Alpha, along with Major Derring and Lt. Colonel Space, attacked and destroyed 2 enemy aircraft carriers in 2 sorties during the Ghost Skies campaign against heavy enemy aircraft and AAA defenses. During the same engagement, Lt. Boomer, working alone, provided outstanding cover on the first attack. His protection of the bombers from superior enemy forces and under heavy fire allowed Lt. Alpha, Major Derring, and Lt. Colonel Space, to sink the lead carrier in a single pass.
Having distinguished himself in the face of the enemy, Major Derring is hereby awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement.
